SAFETY POLICY  USAMRD-K is committed to the prevention of work-related injury and illness through provision and maintenance of a healthy and safe work environment within its premises. We endeavor to provide a hazard free environment by complying with the requirements of legislation, internal regulations, standards, and guidelines. We apply best practices for elimination, control and management of hazards through careful planning at pre-project and pre-task levels, and regular evaluation of safety activities. Our safety culture is anchored on demonstrated management engagement, team wise approach and continuous safety education and training. Safety is listed in every meeting agenda and is talked about every time there is chance.           Donning PPE in the Lab is a requirement in all our laboratories, this is to ensure that all our staff are safe and working in a safe environment               SAFETY MANAGEMENT The Regional Laboratory Consultant oversees the overall safety program. There are three devolved units of safety management; Nairobi, Kericho Field Station and Kisumu Field Station. In accordance with DA PAM 385-69, each region has an appointed Safety/Biosafety Officer and their deputies. Each region has a safety committee. Each laboratory or process has a safety point of contact(POC). TRAINING General safety orientation and training is done for newly employed staff and thereafter annually. Job specific training is conducted at departmental/process level. Additional training can also be accessed through https://www.citiprogram.org. International Air Transport Association (IATA) approved training on Safe transport of Infectious substances, biological specimens, dry ice and related materials are purchased at https://www.saftpak.com SK MANAGEMENT Risks are assessed through weekly, quarterly and biannual inspections using standardized checklists. Job hazard analysis (JHA) is done on standard operating procedures and processes through a risk management worksheet. Control measures are instituted as soon as risks are identified. Employee surveys and drills are conducted periodically to assess safety culture and general employee awareness. Health and Safety Improvement Plans are developed and identified risks mitigated in a time phased manner.
