GEIS News:
Continued processing 3
new protocols and one modification to old malaria protocol.
Their status is as follows:
Modification to WRAIR
#682, KEMRI #484 – Epidemiology of Malaria in Kenyan Adults…
Requested modification to allow me to do surveillance in Korogocho.
This is done in an attempt to see if there is any malaria
transmission occurring within this slum and to give Dr. Dorothy Njeru some
research experience. The
modifications have been approved by WRAIR and KEMRI.
We plan to begin sample collection the second week of July.
New protocol WRAIR #963, KEMRI #677 – Acute febrile illness surveillance
in Kenya. Was returned this
week by the KEMRI Ethics Board, disallowing the leg as a potential
phlebotomy site. The
correction was made to the consent form and the protocol was resubmitted
to the KEMRI Ethics Board and to WRAIR.
On the US Army side, the protocol has passed scientific review and
is going to the WRAIR HUC and the MRMC HSRRB.
New protocol WRAIR #964, KEMRI #678 – Epidemiology of diarrheal illness
in Kenya. This has been
approved by the Kenyan authorities. However,
we are addressing the concerns of the WRAIR SRC.
New
protocol (unnumbered) – Epidemiology of malaria and drug resistance
patterns in Kenya. Has been
approved by the Center for Clinical Research’s Scientific Committee and
is being sent to the KEMRI SSC for review.
Has been submitted to the WRAIR ORM.
Work has begun on two
more protocols: influenza surveillance and epidemiology of admissions to
select hospitals.
I have begun reworking
the outbreak investigation course for presentation to public health
authorities.
Willie Sang spoke with
Prof. H.N.K. Arap Mengech, the Director of the Moi Teaching and Referral
Hospital in Eldoret. Prof.
Mengech very much wants to work with us on our protocols and has advised
us that we do not need to work through intermediaries.
This is good news, as I was concerned about our ability to work
with the chief of Microbiology.
Received a sample from
Malindi of a <2yo child with a 9 day history of fever, who developed
bleeding from injections sites, bleeding from nose and gums, hemoptysis,
and bloody diarrhea. The
child expired on 27 June at approximately 2200.
Preliminary results are expected early next week.
Remain in mourning over
the U.S.’s defeat by Germany.
