Malaria Diagnostic Centre of Excellence in Microscopy (MDCoE),
Walter Reed Project, Kisumu was established in 2003. The centre
conducts microscopy training twice annually and on as per request
basis.
303 participants have been trained from 17 countries; Kenya,
Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria,
Cameroon, Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Thailand and
Guinea Bissau. 18 organizations involved.
Malaria microscopy is still the Gold standard for malaria
prevention, drug & vaccines treatment and diagnostic trials and for
epidemiology. Though microscopy is an imperfect gold standard , its
accuracy depends on innate ability , training experience and
motivation. On methods available to quantify parasitemia this needed
in management of severely ill children
