Study subjects in the Kisumu area who require
hospital-based procedures & expertise or hospital admission are
transported to the New Nyanza Provincial General Hospital in Kisumu.
This hospital includes a 44-bed pediatric inpatient ward with an
attached, dedicated laboratory staffed by WRP personnel (Coulter
counter for CBC, Reflotron for serum electrolytes & liver enzymes,
microscopes & staining material for malaria blood films).
Inpatients, including any admitted study subjects, receive care
overseen by Kenyan pediatricians.
Three pediatricians are on staff (one of whom is employed by the WRP)
and there are routine 24-hour nursing coverage, and blood
transfusion and oxygen supplementation capabilities. Limited
laboratory support will also be available at the new WRP-Kisumu
headquarters building adjacent to the new pediatric ward.
Prevailing conditions in the ward are austere. In the near
future, however, the pediatric department plans to move to a
new, more spacious building immediately adjacent to the existing
hospital compound.
This new facility will represent a significant upgrade with
expansion to 64 beds and new laboratory, pharmacy, and
outpatient departments. It is a 79-room, 1,682 m2
facility with 62 beds (20 each in two general wards, 10 each in a
high-dependency ward and an isolation ward). The entire existing
pediatrics service with the exception of a 20 bed “Burkett’s
Lymphoma” ward, will soon relocate to the new building. IN addition
to the wards, the new facility includes an outpatient department
with consultation rooms, two acute treatment rooms, 12 treatment
bays, a laboratory, phlebotomy room, satellite pharmacy, several
offices and meeting rooms, on-call rooms, laundry, children’s play
room, central courtyard, sleeping room for mothers, stores, and
utility rooms.
